After a two-week hiatus due to summer travel and my wedding anniversary celebration, we’re back with a new episode.

Today I’m sitting down with my first guest, Shayla Varnado. Shayla is a wine and lifestyle creator for Black women on a mission to build their dream life. She is the founder of Black Girls Wine; a Lifestyle Brand celebrating Black women with a passionate affection for wine.

In addition to being the Founder of Black Girls Wine, Shayla is a Marketing & Business Strategy Consultant. She’s also a wife and amazing mother. She wears a few different hats and she wears them well.

Shayla and I delve into a range of topics. Exploring the origins of Black Girls Wine and its mission to provide a welcoming space for Black women to discover and savor wine, driven by our historical underrepresentation in the industry. Additionally, we highlight the remarkable progress of Black women in the wine sector, showcasing their roles as enthusiasts and experts involved in every aspect—from vineyard production to the art of tasting and educational outreach.

Shayla also talks a little about her journey to getting back to herself after motherhood and juggling all aspects of her very full life.

Listen in and get inspired. Don’t forget to pour yourself a glass of wine!

Episode 03 How Lack of Character Impacts Friendship

I get a little personal and very sentimental in this episode where we discuss character building and its profound impact on our friendships. Character building, the process of developing and strengthening positive traits such as integrity, empathy, resilience, and accountability, plays a crucial role in forming and maintaining meaningful relationships.

What happens when character building is neglected? Without core traits like Integrity, Empathy, Resilience, and Accountability our friendships suffer.

Trust erodes, relationships become superficial, and conflicts escalate. Manipulative behavior and inconsistent support can become common, leaving us feeling drained and unfulfilled.

We also touch on the idea that trauma, while challenging, can contribute to character building. The resilience, empathy, and strength gained from overcoming adversity can deepen our connections with others. However, it’s important to note that the outcome of trauma depends on various factors, including support systems and personal circumstances.

Listen in as we explore how investing in character building can lead to stronger, healthier, and more meaningful friendships. By focusing on personal growth and positive traits, we can create a supportive network of friends who uplift and enrich our lives.

Understanding the Psychology of Defiant Behavior

Have you ever experienced someone blatantly ignoring your boundaries or doing something you explicitly said made you uncomfortable? In this episode, we discuss the psychological motives behind such defiant behavior.

First, we’ll talk about some of my pet peeves, and I invite you to reflect on your own irritations. From loud chewing to incessant interruptions, what sets you off? How do you deal with people who violate the boundaries you’ve set?

This discussion sets the stage for a deeper exploration into why certain behaviors trigger such strong reactions in us. We then introduce the concept of psychological reactance. This theory explains why people often do the very thing they’ve been asked not to do. When someone feels their freedom to choose is restricted, they may react by doing the opposite of what is requested. This defiance can stem from a need to reassert control or independence, often unconsciously.

I will share a series of relatable anecdotes where my boundaries were blatantly crossed. These stories illustrate the frustration and confusion that arise from such encounters. They highlight the emotional impact of boundary violations and the importance of respecting others’ limits.

I also invite listeners to share their own experiences with pet peeves and boundary violations. Let’s create a sense of community and support. Whether you’re seeking to understand why people behave defiantly or looking for strategies to handle such situations, this episode offers a few helpful suggestions.

Tune in to explore the intriguing psychology behind pet peeves and the need to do the opposite of what is requested. Discover how you can better manage these everyday challenges!
